A dog of endurance and strength, the Alaskan Malamute is a large breed dog which originated from Alaska. They were used for heavy labor, such as pulling sleds in Alaska, while also being the largest Alaskan dog.

Dark eyes are preferred for this dog when you’re looking for a good breed. Blue eyes however is reported as a fault, according to the AKC standard.

A very loyal and intelligent dog while being very affectionate towards its master, the Alaskan Malamute is loved by many breeders. The problems with breeding the Alaskan Malamute dog is that they need space and can quickly get too hot with their thick coat in hot weather.

Should You Adopt The Alaskan Malamute?


Alaskan Malamute are certainly very loyal to their owners but they do not make good guard dogs as they are also very friendly towards strangers.  You need to act like a pack leader in order to train the Alaskan Malamute, before it becomes disobedient.

They are happy with outdoor activities and life, so bringin the Alaskan Malammute for a run or walk at the park is highly recommended. They make good companions for adults and likewise for children.



Alaskan Malamute are proned to bloat, being such active dogs. They also are proned to chondrodysplasia (dwarfism) while the longest lifespan of the Alaskan Malamute recorded is 15 years.


Make sure to brush the coat of the Alaskan Malamute at least once every few days. The Alaskan Malamute dog sheds heavily but they are a dog breed which are odorless. Twice a year their undercoat comes out as clumps.
